Spasfon
Developed by Teva Laboratories, the Spasfon brand manufactures medications based on phloroglucinol, an active ingredient with antispasmodic properties. Intended to alleviate pains related to digestive, biliary, or uterine disorders, Spasfon medication is also suitable for people suffering from kidney colic or colitis, a pathology more commonly known as irritable bowel syndrome.
Abdominal pain most often manifests itself through involuntary contractions located in the abdomen and can affect the intestine, in case of indigestion, the uterus, during periods, or the bile ducts during hepatic disorders. Spontaneous and more or less acute, spasms create immediate discomfort in the patient and a significant source of stress not only because of the pain they cause, but also because of their unpredictability in terms of frequency and duration of the episode. These contractions actually correspond to an exaggerated reflex of the smooth muscles which, the rest of the time, ensure the transport of food in the digestive tract and stools in the colon. Through phloroglucinol, Spasfon acts directly on smooth muscle fibers to reduce the amplitude of abdominal spasms and soothe associated pain.
Spasfon in tablet form
This medication exists in different forms to best meet patient needs. Tablets are obviously the most traditional solution and suit the majority of people.
Spasfon Lyoc
For people who have difficulty swallowing, Spasfon medication is also available in the form of so-called Lyoc tablets which have the particularity of dissolving directly in the mouth upon contact with the tongue. Their ingestion is thus facilitated and does not risk taking a wrong route. On the other hand, this mode of administration which avoids passage through the digestive tract has the advantage of entering the blood more quickly. Available in 80 or 160 mg, the Lyoc tablet retains the dosage corresponding to two traditional tablets, generally taken in case of spasms in adults.
Spasfon in suppository form
Teva Laboratories also dispense phloroglucinol in suppositories which have the main quality of releasing the active principles locally, without going through the stomach, especially when spasms affect the colorectal area. Moreover, stomach acidity may reduce the effects of the medication a little. They have another advantage, and not least, that of offering a good alternative to tablets for patients suffering from vomiting related to a digestive disorder (gastroenteritis).
In general, and although Spasfon medication in tablets and suppositories is sold without a prescription, it is essential to strictly follow its dosage: 160 mg per intake, 3 times a day.
