The medicine Gaviscon oral suspension is a medicine available without a prescription for stomach upset. Gaviscon is indicated in peptic ulcers and in gastroesophageal reflux disease. The latter results in acid reflux or returnes or stomach sorenesses.
Gaviscon contains sodium alginate (5%) and sodium bicarbonate (2.67%) as active substances. The excipients are calcium carbonate, carbomer (974 P), sodium saccharin, fennel flavor, erythrosine (E127), sodium hydroxide, propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), purified water.
How does Gaviscon syrup work?
Gaviscon will form a gel in contact with the acidic fluid of the stomach, which will float above the gastric contents, thus forming a physical barrier that will oppose the rise of this content in the oesophagus. In the event of severe reflux, if there is still a rise, it is the gel which will thus be interposed between the oesophageal wall and the gastric contents.
Its alkali pH will thus replace the acidic pH, but only at the level of the cardia (high-stomach closure) without modifying the acidic pH of the stomach necessary for good digestion.
How do I take this medicine, Gaviscon, anti-repentle
The recommended dose of Gaviscon oral suspension is 2 teaspoons (10 ml) 3 times a day after the main meals and in the evening at bedtime.
In case of severe regurgitation, it is possible to double this dose. Treatment will not be taken for more than 7 days without medical advice.
A 2 h must be allowed for the use of other medicines. An opened bottle is only kept for 3 months.
Precautions for use of Gaviscon oral suspension
Gavsicon in syrup can be taken by the pregnant or breast-feeding woman. As with all medicines, it is nevertheless preferable to seek medical advice during these particular periods.
Do not take Gaviscon if you are allergic to any of its components.
The dose of 2 teaspoons of Gaviscon provides you with 145 mg of sodium, so this parameter should be taken into account in case of a low-sodium diet or in case of heart failure.
This same dose also provides 160 mg of calcium carbonate: to be taken into account in case of serious disease affecting the kidneys.
