Description
Nicotinell Mint 1 mg is a nicotine replacement medicine designed to help adults stop smoking completely or reduce their cigarette consumption. Each lozenge contains 1 mg of nicotine, which is gradually absorbed through the lining of the mouth to help relieve nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
The mint-flavored lozenges are a convenient, discreet alternative for people who prefer not to use nicotine gum or patches. They can be used when cravings occur and may also be used as part of a structured plan to gradually reduce cigarette consumption.
Nicotinell 1 mg lozenges are primarily intended to support complete smoking cessation.
Indications
Nicotinell Menthe 1 mg is indicated for:
- Helping adults quit smoking.
- Relieving nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping smoking.
- Supporting a gradual reduction in cigarette consumption when complete cessation is not immediately possible.
For the best chance of success, complete smoking cessation should be the goal at the beginning of and throughout treatment.
Directions for Use
Do not swallow the lozenge.
- Suck one lozenge until the taste becomes strong.
- Place the lozenge between the gum and cheek.
- Resume sucking when the taste becomes less noticeable.
- Continue this process until the lozenge has completely dissolved, which takes approximately 30 minutes.
Usual Dosage
Take one lozenge whenever you feel the urge to smoke. Initially, one lozenge may be used every 1–2 hours.
- Usual dosage: 8–12 lozenges per day
- If cravings persist, an additional lozenge may be taken.
- Maximum: 24 lozenges per day
- Do not use more than one lozenge per hour.
Duration of Treatment
Treatment should normally continue for at least 3 months. After this period, gradually reduce the number of lozenges used each day. Treatment can generally be stopped when consumption has been reduced to 1–2 lozenges per day.
Regular use beyond 6 months is generally not recommended unless advised by a healthcare professional. If you are having difficulty stopping treatment after 9 months, consult a healthcare professional.
For Reducing Cigarette Consumption
When used to reduce smoking, Nicotinell lozenges should be used between cigarettes to lengthen smoke-free periods. Cigarettes should progressively be replaced with Nicotinell lozenges, with the goal of reducing cigarette consumption as much as possible.
If you have not reduced your daily cigarette consumption by at least half after 6 weeks, consult a healthcare professional. You should aim to stop smoking as soon as you feel ready and no later than 4 months after beginning treatment.
Important Precautions
Do not use Nicotinell Menthe 1 mg if you:
- Are not normally a smoker.
- Are allergic to nicotine or any of the ingredients.
Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have or have had:
- Heart problems, including a recent heart attack, heart rhythm problems, heart failure, or chest pain/angina.
- A previous stroke.
- High blood pressure.
- Circulatory problems.
- Diabetes.
- An overactive thyroid.
- Pheochromocytoma.
- Liver or kidney disease.
- Inflammation of the mouth or throat, esophagitis, gastritis, or stomach/duodenal ulcers.
- A history of epilepsy or seizures.
If you experience worsening heart-related symptoms while using nicotine replacement therapy, reduce or discontinue use and seek medical advice.
Children and Adolescents
Nicotinell 1 mg should not be used by children under 12 years of age.
Adolescents aged 12–17 years should only use this medicine on the advice of a healthcare professional.
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Nicotine doses intended for adults can cause serious poisoning in young children.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Stopping smoking during pregnancy is very important. Nicotine-containing medicines should preferably be avoided during pregnancy, but if smoking cessation cannot be achieved without medication, Nicotinell should only be used after consultation with a healthcare professional.
Nicotinell should generally be avoided during breastfeeding because nicotine passes into breast milk. If a healthcare professional recommends its use, the lozenge should be taken immediately after breastfeeding and not during the 2 hours before the next feeding.
Food and Drinks
Coffee, acidic beverages, and carbonated drinks can reduce nicotine absorption. Avoid these beverages for 15 minutes before using a lozenge.
Do not eat or drink while the lozenge is in your mouth.
